Show full summary
  • Prosecutors and support staff: Eligible prosecutor offices could apply for grants to hire, retain, and train attorneys and support personnel. Grants are limited to those uses.
  • Tribal, remote, and rural areas: The Attorney General may give preferential consideration to applications that serve tribal, remote, or rural communities or that rehire prosecutors laid off for budget reasons.
  • Cost sharing and funding rules: The federal share would not exceed 75 percent so recipients generally must provide a 25 percent match unless waived. Grant funds may not supplant existing state, local, or Bureau of Indian Affairs funds.
  • Administration and oversight: The Department of Justice may run the program through any component and require monitoring, evaluation, and information from grantees. Funding can be suspended or revoked for noncompliance.

*If enacted and funded, the bill would authorize up to $10.0 million per year from 2026 through 2030, increasing federal spending by up to $50.0 million over that period.*

Grants to hire prosecutors nationwide

If enacted, the Attorney General would set up a nationwide competitive grant program within one year. The program would give grants to state, local, territorial, and tribal prosecutor offices to hire, retain, and train prosecutors and support staff. It would authorize $10 million for each fiscal year 2026 through 2030. Grants could pay up to 75% of project costs, with a 25% non‑Federal match required unless the Attorney General waives it for financial hardship. Funds could not replace existing State, local, or Bureau of Indian Affairs funds. The Attorney General could give preference to rehiring laid-off prosecutors and to tribal, remote, or rural jurisdictions. Projects must include monitoring and evaluation, and the Attorney General may suspend funding for noncompliance.
