Fire Management Assistance Grants for Tribal Governments Act
Sponsored By: Senator Peters, Gary C. [D-MI]
Introduced
Summary
This bill would give Indian tribal governments direct access to FEMA Fire Management Assistance Grants, letting tribes request help themselves for qualifying wildfires. Tribes could still receive FMAG aid under a state's request if they prefer or if a tribal request is not granted. FEMA must update FMAG rules within one year and consult with tribes while considering unique conditions that affect tribal welfare.

Direct fire aid for tribal governments
This bill would let Indian tribal governments directly request fire management assistance declarations and related FEMA grants after a qualifying fire. It would add "Indian tribal government" to the list of eligible recipients. Tribal chief executives or State governors could submit requests. If a tribe's direct request for the same incident is not granted, the tribe could still receive help through a State request. The President would have to update federal rules within 1 year so FEMA can accept tribal requests, consider tribal welfare, and consult government-to-government.
