Taiwan Representative Office Act
Sponsored By: Senator Curtis, John R. [R-UT]
Introduced
Summary
Renames the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office as the Taiwan Representative Office and declares U.S. policy to extend Taiwan de facto diplomatic treatment equivalent to foreign countries. The bill would direct the Secretary of State to seek negotiations to rename the office in the District of Columbia. If renamed, any U.S. law, map, regulation, document, or other government record that refers to TECORE would be treated as referring to the Taiwan Representative Office. It would also state that the renaming does not restore formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan or change the United States' position on Taiwan's international status.

Rename Taipei office as Taiwan Representative Office
If enacted, the bill would state U.S. policy to give the people of Taiwan de facto diplomatic treatment and rename the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States as the Taiwan Representative Office. It would require the Secretary of State to seek negotiations to rename TECO’s Washington, D.C. office. If the office is renamed, any U.S. law, map, regulation, or official record that mentions the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office would be treated as referring to the Taiwan Representative Office. The bill would also say this renaming does not restore formal diplomatic relations or change the United States’ official position on Taiwan’s international status.
