National Nurses Week would be designated to run May 6 through May 12, 2025, and the resolution would express support for and recognition of nurses. It notes the observance began in 1991 and spans from National Recognition Day on May 6 to Florence Nightingale's birthday on May 12. The measure would highlight nurses as the largest component of the health workforce with more than 4.9 million registered nurses and describe their roles in patient advocacy, public health, disaster response, and clinical research. It would call for stronger nursing workforce development, including more doctorally prepared faculty and nurse research scientists, and encourage Americans to observe the week with ceremonies and programs that honor nurses' contributions to health and safety.
