It honors Marines, Sailors, Soldiers, Army air crews, and Coast Guardsmen who fought there, including thousands of Japanese defenders, recognizes the battle's role in enabling the defeat of Japan, reaffirms Admiral Chester Nimitz's statement that "uncommon valor was a common virtue", salutes the 250th anniversaries of the United States Marine Corps and the United States Navy, and encourages commemorative events in Iwo Jima, Washington, D.C., and internationally.
