Veterinarians: Loan Repayment for Shortage Service

The Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program (VMLRP) lets veterinarians enter into agreements to have their educational debt repaid in exchange for providing veterinary services in veterinarian shortage situations. The program was established under law in January 2003 and NIFA will use applicant information to determine eligibility for these loan repayment agreements.

Eligibility Tied to Designated Shortage Areas

NIFA will designate geographic and practice areas that have a shortage of food-supply veterinarians, and veterinarians must agree to provide services in those designated shortage situations for a specified duration to participate in VMLRP. NIFA will collect nomination and application information to support those designations and selections.

Application Time Burden for Applicants

The information collection for VMLRP is estimated to involve 880 respondents and a total of 2,540 burden hours, with reporting frequencies listed as quarterly, annually, and biennially. NIFA will collect information via the Shortage Situation Nomination Form, Application Form, Records and Reports, and Surveys, which represents a time cost for applicants and other respondents.
