Goodyear Claims Sketchy Tires Pose No Real Safety Threat

Published Date: 2/24/2026

Notice

Summary

Goodyear found that some of their Dean Back Country A/T2 truck tires don’t fully meet safety rules but believes this won’t affect safety. They’ve asked the government to decide if this issue is minor and don’t plan to recall or fix the tires. If you have thoughts, you can share them by March 26, 2026, but no extra costs or changes are expected for drivers.

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 0 mixed.

Owners: No recall for labeling error

You may have one of about 8,639 Dean Back Country A/T2 light truck tires manufactured between August 21, 2022 and August 31, 2024 that were labeled as having 1 nylon ply but actually have 2 nylon plies in the tread. Goodyear says it will not recall or fix these tires and expects no extra costs or changes for drivers; NHTSA will decide after comments are submitted by March 26, 2026.

Dealers: Sales ban after notification

If you are a tire dealer or distributor and you still control any of the affected tires, you may not sell, offer for sale, or introduce them into interstate commerce after Goodyear notifies you that the noncompliance exists. Any NHTSA decision only exempts Goodyear from notification and remedy duties for tires no longer under the manufacturer's control.
