SSA verification of SSNs and citizenship
Starting April 1, 2026, AmeriCorps will share applicant records with the Social Security Administration to verify Social Security numbers and citizenship for people applying to serve in approved national service positions and those designated to receive national service education awards. The program runs for 18 months from April 1, 2026 and may be extended one time for up to 12 months.
30‑day contest right after a mismatch
If SSA's match does not verify a person's information, AmeriCorps will notify the individual and they will have at least 30 days from the date the notice is mailed or otherwise provided to submit clear and convincing evidence of SSN accuracy, proof of U.S. citizenship, or both. The individual has an opportunity to contest the accuracy of SSA-provided information.
Transferee notice and parental consent rule
When an education award is transferred under section 148(f), AmeriCorps will notify the transferee that their Social Security number is subject to verification and will send a privacy notice; if the transferee is a minor, AmeriCorps will send the notice to the parent or legal guardian and require the transferee, parent, or guardian to sign a privacy certification authorizing verification.
Which personal data will be shared with SSA
AmeriCorps will provide SSA with each applicant's Social Security number, first and last names, and date of birth; SSA will match those data elements against its Master Files and return verification results to AmeriCorps.
