CDC Improves NHANES Surveys with Public Input Sought

Published Date: 3/9/2026

Notice

Summary

The CDC wants your thoughts on improving how they collect health and nutrition data through surveys like NHANES. This project aims to make surveys easier and better by testing new ways to reach and keep participants, gather info, and design questions. If you have ideas, send them by May 8, 2026—this helps shape smarter, smoother health studies without extra costs to the public.

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 2 costs, 0 mixed.

Large Time Burden for Participants

The CDC estimates the NHANES developmental projects will require 59,465 annualized burden hours total. That estimate covers 35,000 individual respondents at 1.5 hours each, 200 24-hour volunteers at 25 hours each, 1,000 NHANES participants at 1.5 hours each, and smaller numbers of volunteers and experts. The notice also states there is no cost to respondents other than their time.

Possible Biological Samples and Imaging

The CDC may test procedures that ask participants to provide bodily fluid specimens (blood, urine, semen, saliva, breastmilk) and tissue samples, and to undergo digital imaging (retinal scan, liver ultrasound, DEXA) or home examination measurements. The projects also may test feasibility of accessing participants' medical records from hospitals and physician offices.

Testing Outreach and Incentive Changes

CDC will test alternative outreach methods (including social media), changes to advance materials and protocols, and variations or adjustments in incentive structures to improve recruitment and response rates. These tests could change how you are contacted and whether new or different incentives are offered for participation.
