Alabama residents gain digital license options

Beginning October 1, 2026, the Alabama State Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) can issue digital licenses and nondriver IDs when funds are available. They follow existing issuance and renewal rules and can be issued alongside physical cards. Digital cards must contain all the same information, including a barcode or another way to reveal it. You can use a valid, ALEA-approved digital license instead of a physical license while driving or operating a vessel. Judges, police, and state or local government bodies must recognize approved digital cards like physical ones when requesting identification. ALEA can adopt rules to carry out the law.

Digital card holders get privacy protections

Beginning October 1, 2026, showing your digital card through ALEA's approved mobile method does not itself give consent to search other device contents. Access allowed by other laws remains possible. ALEA must use reasonable industry security standards to protect digital cards and their holders' privacy.

Digital card users face added fees

Beginning October 1, 2026, ALEA may charge an additional fee of up to $15 for a digital license or ID. The law does not set the exact fee. Any money collected must go into the state's Public Safety Fund.

Voters cannot use digital photo IDs

Beginning October 1, 2026, ALEA-approved digital licenses and nondriver IDs are not valid voter photo identification. Voters using a driver license or nondriver ID for this purpose must show the physical card.
