Fire chaplains can get firefighter plates

Beginning January 1, 2027, eligible fire chaplains can apply for one firefighter license plate. Applicants must be active members in good standing of the Alabama Fellowship of Fire Chaplains. The Fellowship’s president must sign an affidavit confirming the applicant’s service, good standing, and eligibility.

Firefighter plate limits and fraud penalties

Beginning January 1, 2027, firefighter plates are limited to personally owned private passenger vehicles registered in the applicant’s name. Each plate replaces the standard plate only on the vehicle for which it was issued. Anyone proven to have falsely obtained a plate or falsely certified another person’s eligibility is guilty of a Class C misdemeanor. Alabama’s Department of Revenue can adopt rules to carry out these requirements.

Plate fees support firefighter memorial and help

The act takes effect January 1, 2027, and preserves the $1 yearly surcharge effective January 1, 2022. This charge is added to other firefighter plate fees; it is not a new fee. The state Comptroller distributes net proceeds monthly: 50 cents supports a Council-managed fund to expand and maintain Tuscaloosa’s Alabama Firefighter Memorial. The other 50 cents goes to the Alabama Joint Fire Council for Firefighter Peer Support Program expenses. Since January 1, 2022, these funds require an audit every three calendar years by state public-account examiners or an independent certified public accountant.
