Fee waivers for low-income municipal candidates
Effective immediately upon enactment, candidates in Alabama’s Class 4 municipalities can avoid filing fees if they cannot afford them. They must attest that their gross income is no more than 130% of the federal poverty level. They must also file a copy of their most recent federal tax return with the city clerk. Eligible candidates avoid the $500 mayoral fee or the $250 council or municipal board of education fee.
Set fees for municipal candidates
Effective immediately upon enactment, the law sets candidate filing fees in Alabama’s Class 4 municipalities. Mayoral candidates pay a one-time $500 fee to the city clerk. City council and municipal board of education candidates pay $250.
