Expanded felony assault protections for children

Beginning October 1, 2026, Alabama expands felony assault protections for children in educational environments. The law covers someone who intends to physically injure a child there and causes physical injury to anyone. The offender must be at least 19 and neither employed by nor enrolled in the entity associated with that environment. This conduct is second-degree assault, a Class C felony. Section 16-22A-3 of Alabama law defines which children and educational environments are covered.
