Folic acid rules for corn masa

Beginning October 1, 2027, covered Alabama food businesses must meet minimum folic acid levels: 0.7 milligrams per pound of corn masa flour and 0.4 milligrams per pound of finished corn masa foods. Covered foods are made mainly from corn masa or corn masa flour, and an acceptable industry margin of error applies. Exemptions cover products made by or supplied to cottage food operations and products sold by grocery stores that offer products meeting the requirements. Snacks meant for immediate eating, mainly between meals, are also exempt regardless of package size, including chips, crisps, and extruded snacks. The snack exemption excludes foods made mainly from corn masa flour or wet corn masa that are bulk packaged or commonly used to prepare meals, such as tortillas.
