Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 1 costs, 1 mixed.

Municipal firefighters get overtime compensation choices

Beginning October 1, 2026, full-time, paid municipal fire protection employees in Tuscaloosa County can receive time-and-a-half overtime pay. They can instead choose 1.5 hours of compensatory leave for each qualifying overtime hour. Overtime applies after 24 hours in a tour of duty or 53 hours in a calendar week.

Tuscaloosa public safety director loses overtime eligibility

Beginning October 1, 2026, Tuscaloosa's Executive Director of Public Safety is excluded from these overtime benefits. The person holding this job cannot receive overtime pay or compensatory leave under the law-enforcement and fire-protection provisions.

Police overtime choices and longer shifts

Beginning October 1, 2026, Tuscaloosa County and city law-enforcement officers keep time-and-a-half overtime pay or their choice of time-and-a-half leave. This includes officers employed under L.E.A.A. or L.E.P.A. grants. The regular thresholds remain more than 8 hours daily or 40 hours in a calendar week. Northport or Tuscaloosa city councils can authorize four 10-hour shifts, raising the daily threshold to 10 hours for assigned officers. The weekly threshold stays at 40 hours; officers working five 8-hour shifts keep the regular thresholds.
