Alabama agencies must use Gulf of America

Beginning October 1, 2026, the law renames the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America for all purposes within Alabama. References to the old name count as references to the new name. State and local entities and their employees must use the new name. This includes new maps, documents, educational materials, websites, official communications, and other resources. They must make reasonable efforts to update existing resources they own where practical, unless updates create an operational or financial burden. Public K-12 schools and public colleges may use the old name within broader courses when reasonable for historical purposes.
