Alabama officials can remove board members

Beginning October 1, 2026, six Alabama officials can remove members they appointed to state boards, authorities, or commissions. These officials are the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, House Speaker, Senate President Pro Tempore, and House and Senate Minority Leaders. They can remove members at any time, even when another law sets a different removal process. The same official must fill the vacancy under existing law, and the replacement must meet that law’s qualifications. This power excludes the Alabama State Port Authority, State Ethics Commission, and governing boards of public two-year and four-year colleges. It does not let the Governor remove people appointed to fill vacancies in elected offices.
