Beginning October 1, 2026, covered Alabama education boards must post every covered job opening at least seven calendar days before hiring. This includes openings during the school year and supervisory, managerial, and newly created jobs. For those last three types, the notice period drops from 14 days to seven. Covered boards include all public county and city school boards and Alabama Community College System two-year institutions. Coverage also includes the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind, Youth Services schools, School of Fine Arts, and High School of Mathematics and Science. State Merit System employees are excluded. Also excluded are Institute for Deaf and Blind employees working for Alabama Industries for the Blind and its regional-center satellite employees. Boards must post notices on their website or in a visible place at each school campus and worksite. Notices must list the job title, description, qualifications, salary schedule and amount, application location, deadlines, and other relevant information. Any person or organization can request electronic vacancy notices from the board's executive officer. The Community College System Chancellor handles these requirements for two-year institutions. Boards can temporarily shorten or delay notices only to address dire emergencies involving student safety and welfare. Board policies must follow state policy-adoption rules. The law changes posting procedures, not hiring qualifications.
