More funding for Alabama college students

Alabama public colleges receive $275.1 million for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2026. The Alabama Community College System receives about $102.63 million, including $150,000 for a Civics Academy. The University of Alabama System receives about $63.66 million, and Auburn University receives about $30.64 million. Schools must spend the money under Alabama Code Section 29-9-4. This funds institutions and programs, not direct payments to students.

More money for Alabama local schools

Alabama's Department of Education receives $570 million for listed school systems and education groups, plus $4.9 million for named projects. These funds cover the fiscal year ending September 30, 2026. Limestone County's allocation includes $650,000 for school athletic facilities. Named projects include an Auburn City outdoor classroom ($500,000), Elmore County's CTE IB Program ($550,000), and Montgomery County's Westside Workforce Development Center ($500,000). Both funding packages require the State Superintendent's approval before the department spends the money. They follow Alabama Code Section 29-9-4, with an added option to pay debt service. The money supports schools and projects rather than providing household checks.

Schools can keep unspent education funding

The law takes effect immediately and provides $1 billion from the Education Trust Fund Advancement and Technology Fund. Money left unspent in the fiscal year does not return to the fund. Instead, it carries forward for the same approved purpose, allowing funded education work to continue later.

Career training grants require local funding

The law provides $150 million in matching grants for regional career technology centers for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2026. Applicants must include two local education agencies, or one agency partnering with an Alabama Community College System college. In a college partnership, the local education agency keeps full control of the grant. A Superintendent-appointed committee reviews applications, and local matches vary by financial capacity but cannot exceed 50% of project cost. Each project can receive no more than $20 million across all grant years. The Superintendent may favor agencies that received less than requested, or nothing, under Act 2025-269. Before announcements, the Superintendent must give local superintendents, finance officers, and legislative delegations five days' notice, waivable in emergencies. The Governor is directed to encourage distribution without discrimination.

Teachers get training and classroom technology

The $570 million school funding package includes $2 million for teacher training through Ed Farm Classroom of Tomorrow. Ed Farm can pay for classroom technology tools, software, hardware, professional learning, and related administrative costs. The State Superintendent must report how these funds were used to the designated House and Senate education-budget committee chairs. That report is due October 1, 2027.
