Sheriffs get dual retirement with service limits

Beginning October 1, 2026, qualifying Alabama sheriffs can participate in both the supernumerary sheriff program and the Employees' Retirement System. They must qualify for each program using separate years of service; the same service cannot count toward both. Sheriffs eligible for another county, state, or city retirement plan must choose the plan or plans they want. They must notify the proper authority within 60 days after becoming eligible for payments under the supernumerary sheriff retirement provisions. That choice does not affect their right to benefits under Article 4 of Chapter 21.
