Property tax freeze for Blount seniors

If enacted, this amendment would let Blount County homeowners age 65 or older freeze their home's assessed value for property tax purposes. You would qualify if you own a single-family, owner-occupied home in Blount County and used it as your principal residence for at least five years before the first claim. The freeze would lock the assessed value at the year immediately before you first claim it (claims may begin Oct 1, 2027 using the home's Oct 1, 2026 value). You would still pay tax increases caused by higher millage rates, and any added improvements would be added to the property's base value and taxed. To claim it you would file a written claim with the Blount County Revenue Commissioner between October 1 and December 31 of the applicable year. The amendment must be approved by a majority of qualified electors voting on it before this would take effect.
