Lower card-fee taxes for Alabama shoppers

Beginning September 1, 2026, Alabama excludes qualifying card payment fees from sales and use tax. Covered payments include debit cards, credit cards, general-use prepaid cards, and other payment codes or devices approved through a payment card network. The fee must offset interchange fees charged to the seller for processing card payments. Paper checks do not qualify. Your tax savings depend on the fee and tax rate. Alabama’s Department of Revenue must set rules to administer the exclusion.
