New Tuscaloosa County fees for court papers

Beginning June 1, 2026, Tuscaloosa County charges $60 per document personally served by the sheriff’s office or its designee. This includes mental health documents and orders issued by the probate judge’s office. Civil documents issued specifically by the circuit court remain exempt. Multiple papers served on the same party or organization at one time count as one document. The designated court official collects the fee. The circuit clerk or probate office keeps $3 from each fee for documents issued through that office. The remaining money is split equally between the sheriff’s law enforcement fund and the district attorney’s solicitor’s fund. For civil cases, personal-service requests from outside Alabama carry an $85 fee per document. That money is split equally between the same two funds to operate the sheriff’s and district attorney’s offices.
