Property value freeze for Cullman County seniors

The law authorizes a senior property tax exemption through a constitutional amendment that requires majority voter approval. Claims begin October 1, 2027, using the home's assessed value from October 1, 2026. Eligible homeowners must be at least 65 and own single-family, owner-occupied property in Cullman County. The home must be their main residence for at least five years immediately before the first claim's tax year. Homeowners must file a written claim with the Cullman County Revenue Commissioner between October 1 and December 31. The value freeze continues while the home remains their main residence, and other legal exemptions, including the homestead exemption, remain available. Tax rate changes still apply, and later additions or improvements add taxable assessed value above the frozen base.
