Escambia County sheriff can receive extra pay

Beginning June 1, 2026, the Escambia County sheriff can receive extra pay for duties tied to municipal police contracts. The county commission must adopt a resolution authorizing the pay, and the sheriff and commission must agree to it. The county pays this amount separately from the sheriff’s regular salary; the law sets no amount. The extra pay ends if either side withdraws from the agreement. It does not affect or increase compensation for any supernumerary sheriff in the county.

Escambia towns can contract for sheriff services

Beginning June 1, 2026, Escambia County towns and cities can contract with the sheriff for police services. Contracts can cover town limits and the town’s police jurisdiction. They can authorize the sheriff and commissioned deputies to enforce laws and town ordinances, make arrests, and issue citations. They act with the same enforcement authority as town police officers and keep their existing legal and constitutional immunity. Both the sheriff and county commission must approve each contract. The town must pay the county treasury enough for needed staff and equipment. The town, sheriff, and commission must agree on that amount; the law sets no fixed payment. The county commission can receive and spend these funds on the contracted police services.
