Escambia County tax inspectors face spending caps

Beginning October 1, 2026, Escambia County can set cigarette-tax collection rules but cannot change how that tax money is distributed. The county must fund tax stamps and other enforcement materials for the judge of probate. It can hire inspectors to help the judge enforce cigarette and beer taxes. Inspector expenses, including pay, are capped at $1,200 monthly for cigarette taxes and $500 monthly for beer taxes. The county general fund pays these costs first and must be reimbursed under Section 45-27-247.06 for cigarette taxes and general law for beer taxes. The law also repeals Act 575 of 1953 concerning the county beer tax; that repeal alone does not establish household tax savings.
