More disease benefit protection for firefighters

Beginning October 1, 2026, Alabama state and city firefighters gain Parkinson's coverage for disability and death benefits. Parkinson's must appear during service, and firefighters must show workplace exposure to a known toxin linked to increased Parkinson's risk. Eligibility generally requires three years of service and, if required at hiring, an exam showing no evidence of the disease. A city firefighter hired without a required exam qualifies after three continuous service years before September 8, 1967. For covered disease claims, cities must prove a non-work cause is more likely than not to deny benefits on that basis. This proof rule covers all occupational diseases defined by the law, not just the previously named diseases.

Firefighters face limits on benefit programs

Beginning October 1, 2026, firefighters eligible for Alabama workers' compensation receive those benefits only under that program's rules. The same limit applies to firefighters eligible for benefits from the State Employee Injury Compensation Trust Fund. The occupational-disease benefit rules do not govern those benefits. The law states no change to payment amounts.
