Chilton County seniors get property value freeze

The law authorizes a constitutional amendment freezing assessed home values for Chilton County homeowners age 65 or older. The amendment requires majority approval from qualified voters voting on it to become part of the state constitution. The property must be classified as a single-family, owner-occupied home. It must have been the owner's main residence for at least five years immediately before the first claim's tax year. The freeze uses the assessed value from the year before the first claim. Claims begin October 1, 2027, using the property's value on October 1, 2026. File in writing with the Chilton County Revenue Commissioner between October 1 and December 31 of the claim year. To keep the freeze, owners must keep living there and remain eligible for homestead and other legally authorized exemptions. Other authorized exemptions remain available. Tax rates can still change, and added value from later property additions remains taxable.
