School pledge and prayer participation rules

The law requires majority voter approval before these rules become part of Alabama’s constitution. Upon that approval, local school boards must require public K–12 schools to conduct the Pledge at each school day’s start. Boards must also adopt policies allowing prayer that a student starts and leads. Participation in both activities is voluntary, and students can opt out based on their own beliefs. Policy violations can be reported to the local superintendent, who must review them.
