Wilcox County seniors get home assessment freeze

Beginning October 1, 2027, Wilcox County homeowners age 65 or older can freeze their home's value used for property taxes. The home must be single-family, owner-occupied, and their main home for at least five years immediately before the first claim's tax year. The freeze uses the prior year's assessed value; the first available claims use the value on October 1, 2026. File a written claim with the Wilcox County Revenue Commissioner between October 1 and December 31. The freeze lasts while the property remains the homeowner's main home, and other lawful exemptions, including the homestead exemption, remain available. Tax rate changes still affect the bill, and later additions increase the taxable assessed value.
