Wilcox County property tax renewal requires approval

Effective June 1, 2026, the law authorizes Wilcox County to replace an expiring property tax on taxable property. Starting with the tax year beginning October 1, 2027, the county commission can raise the board and county tax. The increase is capped at nine mills, raising the rate from 10 mills to no more than 19 mills. One mill means $1 per $1,000 of assessed property value. Approval requires a public hearing, compliance with Alabama Constitution Section 217(f), and a majority of county voters voting on the increase. The expiring tax's final levy covers the tax year beginning October 1, 2026, with final payment and collection October 1, 2027. The approved increase starts when that tax expires, with no net increase in the total county property tax rate. Two mills of the increase fund general county needs; seven mills fund Wilcox County public schools.
