New rules for Etowah County personnel board

Beginning July 1, 2026, Etowah County’s personnel department consists of a five-member board and a personnel director. The department oversees county employees and appointees covered by the county’s classified service rules. The revised appointment rules apply as current board terms expire. The probate judge appoints the seat whose term expires September 30, 2028. The county commission appoints the seat expiring September 30, 2030, on the county engineer’s recommendation. Three seats have terms expiring September 30, 2026. Their appointments come from the revenue commissioner, the Northeast Alabama Labor Council president, and the county commission. For that commission-appointed seat, the chief administrative officer recommends the member. Later terms last four years and begin October 1. Members must be qualified Etowah County voters and cannot hold a salaried public office or county job when appointed. They cannot take a salaried county office or job while serving or for one year afterward. Members receive $60 per day for regular meetings or special hearings or meetings related to pending disciplinary action, capped at $180 monthly. The chair receives $75 per day, capped at $225 monthly. The county treasury pays these amounts.
