Colbert County seniors get property assessment freeze

The law authorizes a property tax assessment freeze for Colbert County homeowners age 65 or older, subject to majority voter approval. The owner must own and occupy a single-family home in the county. It must be their main home for at least five years immediately before the tax year of their first claim. The freeze uses the assessed value from the year immediately before the first claim. Claims begin October 1, 2027, using the property's value as of October 1, 2026. Owners must apply in writing to the Colbert County Revenue Commissioner between October 1 and December 31. The freeze lasts only while the property remains their main home. Tax rates can still change, and later additions increase the taxable assessed value. Owners can keep their homestead exemption and other exemptions allowed by law.
