Veterans gain teaching access with time limits

Beginning October 1, 2026, Alabama's Department of Education can issue qualifying veterans a temporary teaching certificate without a bachelor's degree. It covers teaching fields that normally require that degree. Applicants must document at least 48 months of active-duty service and an honorable discharge or medical separation. They need 60 college credits and a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. They must pass the required Praxis content test and criminal history check, and submit application forms and fees. A local school superintendent or private K-12 school administrator must recommend them. Applicants must also meet any additional State Board of Education admission criteria. The certificate lasts five school years, is issued only once, and cannot be renewed. The employing superintendent must assign a mentor for at least two school years after employment begins. Alternatively, holders must participate in the Alabama Teacher Mentor Program if their local school board participates. Teaching under this certificate does not count toward continued service status, and holders cannot receive an emergency certificate. The department must provide the expiration date and a list of ways to qualify for a professional teaching certificate. The State Board of Education must adopt rules to carry out this law.
