Alabama Class IV cities can keep auditors

Beginning October 1, 2026, Alabama Class IV cities can keep the same auditor for more than three consecutive fiscal years. Each fiscal year must still end with an audit by a reputable, independent certified public accountant. The city council must fund or arrange the audit. The mayor must prepare a detailed statement of all city receipts and expenses. An accurate summary of the annual audit report must appear once in a newspaper of general circulation in the city. The mayor must submit the report at the council’s first meeting after the report is completed.
