Alabama drops required licenses for natural hairstylists

Beginning October 1, 2026, Alabama exempts natural hair stylists from Board of Cosmetology and Barbering licensing. Facilities offering only natural hair styling are also exempt, and braiding and weaving leave the state's cosmetology definition. Covered styling includes cleansing, weaving, interweaving, extending, locking, braiding, and arranging hair. It excludes cutting, coloring, permanent waving, relaxing, hair removal, and chemical treatments. Natural hairstylist licenses remain optional, including for students enrolled in public high school career and technical education cosmetology programs.
