Transit authorities gain more business options
Alabama transit authorities can join corporations, partnerships, joint ventures, nonprofits, and other lawful business groups. These groups must relate to transit operations, land purchases, or supporting authority activities. Authorities can also create, acquire, operate, or support for-profit and nonprofit subsidiaries and affiliates, and finance these organizations. The law does not create a direct household payment or benefit.
New limits on transit property seizures
Businesses that Alabama transit authorities join cannot use eminent domain—the power to force property transfers for public use. Authorities' subsidiaries and affiliates also cannot use that power. Transit authorities cannot use eminent domain to acquire land or property rights held by public or private railroads or utilities. They can still acquire railroad or utility property and rights by other means.
