Helping Schools plates change, with replacement savings

Beginning January 1, 2027, Alabama’s Helping Schools plates require a white background, red lettering, and a red apple, green book, and yellow ruler. Alabama resident vehicle owners pay an extra $20 each year for these plates, plus regular license fees and taxes. Plates follow the same issuing process as personalized plates and last five years; regular fees and taxes remain due between replacements. At expiration, owners can choose standard plates, other personalized plates, or new Helping Schools plates. For the registration year beginning January 1, 2027, only, holders get the new design without a replacement-plate fee if they possess a Helping Schools plate bought or renewed from March 1, 2025, through December 31, 2026.
