More transition help for released inmates

Arizona keeps its mental health transition program available through June 30, 2031. The Department can place up to 500 eligible inmates each fiscal year; they must have a serious mental illness, qualify for AHCCCS benefits after release, and agree in writing to provide information for program reports. Services last at least 90 days or for the length of the person’s release, and may include help getting health coverage, case management, housing, psychiatric care, drug testing, and transportation. Qualifying participants are released three months before their earliest release date, based on risk and need; this does not apply to people convicted of certain offenses. The Department reports each year on participation, services, and return-to-custody rates.
