Victims can sue over synthetic intimate images
Starting October 1, 2026, a person harmed by unlawful sharing of a synthetically created intimate image can sue in Connecticut Superior Court. The defendant must have knowingly shared it, by electronic or other means, intending to harm that person. The person can seek an order stopping further sharing and damages caused by it, including financial, emotional-distress, and punitive damages. The case must be filed within two years after the person discovers the sharing. At the person's request, the court may protect their identity and may award costs and reasonable attorney fees to the winning side. This action does not replace other civil remedies.
Platforms must remove reported synthetic intimate images
Starting October 1, 2026, covered platforms must provide a clear, plain-language way for a harmed person or the attorney general to request removal. A valid request needs a signature from the person or an authorized representative, enough information to find the image, a brief statement that it was shared without consent or breaks the law, and contact information. Platforms must remove the image as soon as possible and within 48 hours, and make reasonable efforts to find and remove copies. Platforms acting in good faith to remove or block access to an image are protected from liability under this section. The attorney general can ask a court to impose penalties of up to $25,000 per day for each harmed person when a platform breaks these rules.
