Restitution for funeral contract fraud
Starting July 1, 2027, eligible people can seek restitution for fraud or other unlawful acts involving money paid under funeral contracts entered into on or before July 1, 2026. Claims must include the original contract and proof of claimant status, services provided, and payments for services not provided. Before payment, claimants must assign their recovery rights to the state. Payments depend on available account funds and are capped at $10,000 per contract.
Clearer rules for prepaid funeral contracts
Starting July 1, 2026, Connecticut funeral contracts must include the purchaser’s signed statement that they received the state’s fact sheet and had time to review it before signing. Contracts must also state in bold that the purchaser should receive an escrow notice confirming the first deposit and its amount. The notice is due within 25 days after the funeral director receives the deposit.
