New hospice care pilot for Medicaid patients
Beginning July 1, 2026, Connecticut law creates a hospice pilot for Medicaid patients with advanced illness who qualify for hospice. Patients must have complex needs requiring intensive care that cannot be safely managed at home or in a skilled nursing facility. The Department of Social Services must start the pilot by December 30, 2027, using money specifically appropriated for it. The program must use a licensed short-term hospital special hospice. The hospice must obtain the appropriate license before providing care beyond its existing license. By January 15, 2027, the department must report on the pilot's development, potential savings, and recommended funding or legal changes. The report goes to the legislature's appropriations, human services, and public health committees.
