Property tax savings for veteran spouses

Beginning October 1, 2025, a surviving spouse or domestic partner of a disabled veteran can claim the veteran’s homestead deduction in DC. You qualify if the veteran was rated totally and permanently disabled from a service-related condition, or was paid at 100% for unemployability, at the time of death. The home must have had the veteran deduction at death or would have qualified if the veteran had applied. You apply with the DC Office of Tax and Revenue, and the DC Office of Veterans Affairs certifies the veteran’s disability status for your claim. This deduction lowers your DC property tax bill.
