Five DC schools must refer truant teens

By August 12, 2024, the Mayor identifies five DC secondary schools that had over 50% truancy in 2023–2024. The Mayor notifies these schools at least 10 business days before the first day of school in 2024–2025, with contacts and timelines. During School Year 2024–2025, those schools must refer any student age 14 through 17 to the Department of Human Services within 2 school days after the 15th unexcused full-day absence in that year.

Emergency pilot law lasts up to 90 days

The law takes effect after the Mayor approves it or after a Council veto override. It remains in effect for no longer than 90 days after the act’s applicability date.
