Faster release of police videos and names

The law requires MPD to publicly release the names and body camera videos of all MPD officers directly involved in a death or serious use of force. It also requires posting the names of other law enforcement officers directly involved when MPD is at the scene, plus a short incident description. For officer‑involved deaths on or after August 1, 2025, required reports must list all involved MPD and other officers by name. For incidents between August 1, 2025 and the law’s effective date, MPD must make these public within 10 business days after the law takes effect. The law defines “law enforcement officer” broadly (federal, state, or local) and covers other officers and police dogs when an MPD officer is present.

Limits on police video viewing for reports

MPD officers cannot watch body camera footage before writing the first report for any death or serious use of force that directly involves an MPD officer. A narrow exception allows review to prepare initial reports for incidents involving non‑MPD officers that happened before this law took effect. For other incidents, officers must state in their reports whether they watched any body camera video and list which clips they viewed.
