Illegal cannabis shops face quick closure

Beginning April 1, 2025, the Board can enforce against and summarily close unlicensed cannabis businesses that applied during the open window but still operate illegally. Before April 1, it can close any such shop that sells Schedule I drugs, like psychedelic mushrooms or DMT. The Board, with the Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration and the Metropolitan Police Department, can close and padlock these businesses. It can also shut unlicensed shops that stop selling cannabis but keep selling Schedule I drugs.

Immediate closure of dangerous licensed shops

The Board can immediately close a licensed business if, after getting its license, it does illegal acts that create an imminent danger to public health or safety. Regulators can suspend operations right away to protect people.
