Special education for adults in DC corrections

The law makes DC’s Department of Corrections responsible for a free appropriate public education (FAPE) in its adult facilities. You qualify if you are 18 or older, still within IDEA/DC FAPE eligibility, and were identified with a disability or had an IEP. DOC must arrange special education and related services while you are in custody. This applies during the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 school years. DOC can keep its contract with Maya Angelou Public Charter Schools to avoid any break in services this school year.
