New safety standards for office surgery

The law takes effect July 1, 2026. By January 1, 2027, the Florida Building Commission and State Fire Marshal must establish safety design standards for office surgery suites. These are the parts of physicians’ offices where surgery is performed. The standards belong in Florida’s building and fire prevention codes, as an alternative to ambulatory health care facility standards. They must allow outpatient care for up to six patients at once who need help protecting themselves during an emergency. This includes patients who need that help because of emergency conditions, anesthesia, injury, or illness.
