Stronger seizure care rules for students

Florida charter schools must follow student epilepsy-care rules. A student’s seizure action plan must include written medical orders describing recommended care. A medical professional chooses the orders’ format and develops and signs the plan in consultation with the student’s parent. After receiving the plan, the school nurse or appropriate employee must verify training for staff with regular student contact, including teachers and staff transporting the student to school or school activities. Training stays valid for 5 years.

Seizure education and school response posters

Florida’s health department must maintain an epilepsy education program for doctors, hospitals, county health departments, and the public. The program shares information about epilepsy care and treatment and must include the required school epilepsy education and training. Each school must display a department-developed poster explaining basic steps for responding to a seizure. The department must also identify free posters from a national nonprofit supporting people with epilepsy or seizure disorders.
