More privacy for Florida violence survivors

The law expands Florida’s address confidentiality protections to include dating violence survivors enrolled in the program. The Attorney General shields participants’ home, school, and work addresses listed on their applications, related phone numbers, and Social Security numbers. The Department of State and local election supervisors shield participants’ names, addresses, and phone numbers in voter records. Disclosure is allowed to law enforcement to carry out a valid arrest warrant or to someone named in a court order. The Attorney General’s exemption also ends when a participant’s program certification is canceled. Protections cover records held before, on, or after the law’s effective date. The law takes effect on the same date as SB 296 or similar legislation from the same session or an extension. Its effective date depends on that legislation becoming law and taking effect. The exemptions face legislative review and expire October 2, 2031, unless lawmakers reenact them or save them from repeal.
